How salary conversion works
Every pay period is just the hourly rate scaled by time. The key formulas:
Hourly = annual salary ÷ (hours/week × 52)
A full-time 40-hour week means 2,080 working hours per year (40 × 52) — the number payroll systems use. So $25/hour × 2,080 = $52,000/year, and a $75,000 salary ÷ 2,080 ≈ $36.06/hour. Weekly is hourly × hours/week; biweekly is weekly × 2; monthly is annual ÷ 12.
What the numbers leave out
These are gross figures — before federal, state, and local taxes, Social Security, Medicare, health premiums, and retirement contributions, which can easily take 20–35%. Salaried roles also differ from hourly in overtime eligibility: hourly workers generally must be paid time-and-a-half over 40 hours, while many salaried workers are exempt. And do not forget paid time off — two weeks of PTO is effectively a ~4% raise versus unpaid time.
